Three Ethic Models Essay Example for Free
Three Ethic Models Essay This essay will explain the three ethic models, which are the utilitarian model, moral rights model and justice model (Waddell et al. 2007, 166), the application of these ethic models pertaining to the case study, and which ethic model would be best referred to in deciding the course of action to take to solve the problem that has arisen due to the circumstances that happened due to the employers forcing minimum wage exemption of their employees. (Roberts 2013) Waddell et al. (2007, 164) suggests that ethics as how people or groups perceive decisions as right or wrong differently. An ethical decision made according to the utilitarian model is defined by the most benefit for the most number of individuals. (Waddell et al. 2007, 166) Jardins and McCall (1985, 368) suggest that to further understand the meaning of employee rights, one would look at what both the managers and employees would goods both parties are aiming for in an employment agreement. Both parties will have differing aims and strategies to create changes or benefits from and for the company, resulting in a conflict of interest. Gill 2003, 308) For instance, managers would set a target to maximize the profits of the company and ââ¬Å"maintain the firmââ¬â¢s long-term growth and stability (Jardins and McCall 1985, 368); while employees may aim to gain benefits and have a comfortable life, which is obtained by receiving at least minimum pay, or even ââ¬Å"higher wagesâ⬠. (Jardins and McCall 1985, 368) Managers have the responsibility to analyze the situation carefully, and make a decision that would benefits the highest number of stakeholders, i. . the employees. (Waddell et. Al 2007, 166) If wage rates were to be increased, the company would make lower profits. (Jardins and McCall 1985, 368) Wage increments would add to the production costs, so customers would not want to purchase the products if they become too expensive, therefore decreasing profits over time. Granting benefits could potentially ââ¬Å"threaten long-term stabilityâ⬠in the long run. (Jardins and McCall 1985, 368) Suppose the manager decides to reject the employeesââ¬â¢ requests and demand. In which case, the companyââ¬â¢s profits and stability will be sustained, customers are kept happy with low product costs, but the employees will barely survive on low wages, even more so if they are receiving less than minimum wage. A ethical decision made according to the moral rights model is a decision made on a basis that it preserves and conserves the basic human rights and privileges of the individuals as best as possible. (Waddell et al. 2007, 166) People are morally responsible to ensure that each other are able to have a life that is minimally good. Jeurissen 2007, 3) Stakeholders make up the organization, so it is important to know and understand their interests in the company. (Jeurissen 2007, 3) Takemura (2009, 27) stated that the United Statesââ¬â¢ delegate support that people have to respect the rights of objectors, so ensuring minimum wage is the highest priority. Dealing under the Fair Trade standards means that companies must treat its stakeholders in a fair a nd just manner, with employers granting its employees their workersââ¬â¢ rights, such as minimum wages, good safety standards, and proper housing. Fair Trade International 2013) For the protection of their rights, every worker has the right to affiliation with trade unions. (Kallstrom and Eide 1999, 489) Trade unions exist for the purpose of maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment. (Webb and Webb 1920, 28) Under the moral rights model, managers should take the course of action that best maintains the rights and principles of the organizationââ¬â¢s stakeholders. (Waddell et al. 2007, 166) For instance, any course of action taken that has a great negative impact on a stakeholder would be considered unethical. Waddell et al. 2007, 166) Hence, trade unions will strive to uphold the rights of the employees, while managers cannot implement the minimum wage exemption without the consent of the workers. (Roberts 2013) Since the workers did not give their consent, t hey have the right to receive nothing less minimum wages. (Roberts 2013) The justice model defines decisions made that distribute both negative and positive outcomes among stakeholders in a fair and impartial manner as an ethical decision. (Waddell et al. 2007, 166) A right is usually nothing more than a claim or demand, unless there is a tool that enables the implementation of the right or is built into the ââ¬Å"institutional structureâ⬠. (Halstead and Pike 2006, 29) Rights have been constituted as the best way to maintaining the ââ¬Å"just resolution of conflict and general human well-beingâ⬠, and is recognized by the law. (Halstead and Pike 2006, 29) The right to minimum wages is a socio-economic right. (Jeurissen 2007, 3) Jeurissen (2007, 3) stated that rights are requisite when it comes to individuals cooperating within in a corporate organization. There are several examples of socio-economic rights, such as legislation and collective labour agreements, a category of rights in which the right to minimum wage is included. Every individual is able to exercise their rights, as resolution by the law. (Opsahl and Dimitrijevic 1999, 633) The resolution was made so that rights could be recognized and respected, in order for justice to be possible, should any of these rights be violated or disrespected by the relevant authorities. (Opsahl and Dimitrijevic 1999, 633) Rights should not be restricted in order to have social equilibrium within an organization. Opsahl and Dimitrijevic 1999, 634) Furthermore, ââ¬Å"a justice approach to the minimum wage would enable us to consider our valuesâ⬠. (Levin-Waldman 2000, 43) A manager referring to the justice ethic model should consider that rights are recognized by the law, and therefore should abide by the law by respecting the employeesââ¬â¢ rights; otherwise the governmental authoriti es would have to take action on the manager. Based on the analysis of all three ethic models, the best ethic model to apply to the case study is as per the thesis statement, which is the moral rights ethic model. The workers of the Nike factories in Indonesia should be allowed their minimum wage. As stated earlier, minimum wages are a fundamental right of an individual. The activist Jim Keady also stated that forcing minimum wage exemption on workers is a ââ¬Å"clear violation of Nikeââ¬â¢s code of conduct. â⬠(Roberts 2013) Also, the workers should be able to enjoy at least minimum comfortable living conditions, as well as be protected from harsh treatment in the workplace. The manager of Nike should recognize and respect the rights of the workers and not force the exemption of minimum wage upon them. The management could perceive the company to lose some of its customers, and potentially be at a financial loss in the long-run. On the other hand, the trade unions and activists are satisfied that their principles and values are being upheld, and the workersââ¬â¢ rights are protected. Indeed, Employees should be treated fairly and their rights should be upheld. People are morally responsible to ensure that each other are able to have a life that is minimally good. (Jeurissen 2007, 3) Stakeholders make up the organization, so it is important to know and understand their interests in the company. Jeurissen 2007, 3) In which case, the workers can be considered important stakeholders in the organization, so it is unethical to enforce a minimum wage exemption against their will. Should the manager be proven guilty of forcing employees to sign a contract implementing the exemption of minimum wages, he or she should question their values as to whether or not their actions adhere to Nike ââ¬â¢s claims that they ââ¬Å"care about the welfare of their workersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"want to see them have decent livesâ⬠. In short, the manager should respect the employeesââ¬â¢ right to minimum wage. Reference List Des Jardins, Joseph R. and John J. Criticism of Bryants To a Waterfowl :: Poems of Bryant
The poems of Bryant may be classed, with regard to their subjects:--those expressing a universal interest, relative to the great conditions of humanity, types of nature symbolical of these, as the Winds; poems of a national and patriotic sentiment, or expressive of the heroic in character, as the Song of Marion's Men. Of these, probably the most enduring will be those which draw their vitality more immediately from the American soil. In these there is a purity of nature, and a certain rustic grace, which speak at once the nature of the poet and his subject. Symbolic images of nature abound in his verses. Here Ià ¡Ã ¯d like to share some of my observation of some of the poem à ¡Ã °to a waterfowlà ¡Ã ±. Whither, 'midst falling dew, While glow the heavens with the last steps of day, Far, through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue Thy solitary way? Whitherà ¡Ã ªto what place. We have to read the whole stanza to complete the question. The author delays the meaning so long by putting in the description of time and place to create a feeling of distance to the destination. And "thee, thou, thy"--these are all poetic ways of saying "you" in the singular form. In a sense, focusing on a single distinctive "you" with no possibility of it being the plural "you." So, maybe it is more than just poetic diction, but the emphasis of solitude. Seek'st thou the plashy brink Of weedy lake, or marge of river wide, Or where the rocking billows rise and sink On the chafed ocean side? Rubbed away by friction, constant irritation. Here are three different possible destinations for the waterfowl. they have something in common. There is a Power whose care Teaches thy way along that pathless coast,-- The desert and illimitable air,-- Lone wandering, but not lost If he is speaking of God (what kind of god?), why does he call him a Power? Birds migrate because of natural instincts--what is the connection to a Power here? He might imply that Nature and God are identified Again, notice the emphasis on Lone. In the fifth stanza, cold thin atmosphere, stoop, weary," and "welcome land" contrast sharply. which adds to the picture of the bird both concretely and symbolically. this bird's flight is beginning to represent the lonely and lifelong struggle of the writer himself in hope of finding his welcome land . Thou'rt gone, the abyss of heaven Hath swallowed up thy form; yet, on my heart

English Tennyson Essay Essay
How far do you agree with one readerââ¬â¢s view that ââ¬Å"the men in Tennysonââ¬â¢s poems are whining, selfish and arrogant, with little to recommend themâ⬠? In Tennysonââ¬â¢s poem Tithonus, some may see him as self pitying. In the first stanza it begins with how man is born, works on the earth, then dies and is buried underground. However, the speaker, Tithonus, is cursed to live forever, ââ¬Å"Me only cruel immortality consumesâ⬠. Tithonus then goes on to tell Aurora, goddess of the dawn, ââ¬Å"I wither slowly in thine armsâ⬠. He expresses a passionate grief about this while he is now a ââ¬Å"gray shadowâ⬠that was once a glorious and beautiful man chosen by Aurora to be her lover. He remembers long ago that he had asked Aurora to grant him eternal life, but the hours that accompanied Aurora were angry at Tithonus as he was able to resist death. Now, though he cannot die, he remains forever old and has to endure waking up to Aurora who is able to renew herself every morning, consequently stays forever young. In the third stanza, just before the sun rises, Tithonus tells us that he can see the ââ¬Å"dark worldâ⬠where he was born and was a mortal being. Aurora is told by Tithonus that she always grows beautiful, but she then leaves suddenly without having answered his request, ââ¬Å"In silence, then before thine answer given departest, and thy tears are on my cheekâ⬠which tells us the sadness he feels about his curse of being old but never dying. He also questions Aurora as to why she must ââ¬Å"scareâ⬠him with her look of regret as this makes him fear that an old saying ââ¬Å"The Godââ¬â¢s themselves cannot recall their giftsâ⬠might not be true. Tithonus then sighs and starts to reminisce about his youth, and remembered how his body used to come alive when he lay down waiting for the dawn, ââ¬Å"..and felt my blood glow with the glow that slowly crimsonââ¬â¢d allâ⬠. In the final stanza, Tithonus pleads with Aurora to not keep him imprisoned in the East as the sun always rises in the East, so he has to watch her rise anew each morning, because his eternal old age means he has to endure the overwhelming pain of watching Auroraââ¬â¢s eternal renewal. He asks her how it is possible for his nature to continue to mix with hers as they are both so different now. Tithonus wakes up each morning ââ¬Å"coldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"wrinkledâ⬠whereasà she rises to ââ¬Å"happy men that have the power to dieâ⬠. He asks Aurora ââ¬Å"release me, and restore me to the groundâ⬠because he is miserable and can only appreciate life when he is dead. This way, Aurora can see his grave when he rises, and he who is buried in the earth will be able to forget the emptiness of his present state. Throughout the poem, there is no real sequence or structure to it. Tithonusââ¬â¢ thoughts and feelings jump back and forth; this shows the disorder and confusion in his life as he is immortal and life is a never ending struggle for him. Throughout the whole poem, Tithonus is whining about his immortal curse and how he pleads with Aurora to release him, even though he had asked her to grant him eternal life. This shows how arrogant he really is, because the reason he wanted eternal life was because he had remembered how much of a beautiful man he was. Aurora had given Tithonus what he had desperately longed for, then throughout the poem he had put all his misery, unhappiness and desperation on her as he realised he would stay forever old because the Hours punished him. He is trying to make Aurora feel guilty for what she has done because he has to be in the presence of her eternal youth and beauty. In Tennysonââ¬â¢s poem Ulysses some may view this as another example of how arrogant and selfish men are. Ulysses announces that he sees very little point in him staying at home ââ¬Å"by this still hearthâ⬠with his old wife, which shows very little respect for her. He also speaks of his travels and how he intends to live life to the fullest and swallow every last drop of life. He has been exposed to many different types of people and their way of life. They have also exposed Ulysses to the ââ¬Å"delight of battleâ⬠as he was fighting the Trojan War with his fellow soldiers. Ulysses says that his travels and what he has seen has shaped who he is, ââ¬Å"I am a part of all that I have metâ⬠he explains. Ulysses declares it is boring to stay in one place, ââ¬Å"how dull it is to pause, to make an endâ⬠and to remain in one place is to pretend that all there is to life is simply breathing. He yearns for new experiences that will broaden his horizons and grow in wisdom and learning ââ¬Å"to follow knowledge like a sinking starâ⬠. Ulysses then speaks to an unknown audience about his sonà Telemachus and how he will govern the island while he will continue his travels at sea. He speaks highly of his son Telemachus, praising his dedication and devotion to the gods ââ¬Å"and pay meet adoration to my household godsâ⬠. This poem is written as a dramatic monologue and is spoken by a single character, which is Ulysses, and his identity is revealed through his own words. The lines are in unrhymed iambic pentameter which gives a natural and fluid quality to Ulyssesââ¬â¢ speech. A lot of the lines in the poem end in the middle rather than the end, which is seen as appropriate for this poem because it is about pushing forward in life. Finally, the poem is split up into four paragraphs or sections that each has a thematic unit to them. In all dramatic monologues the character of the speaker emerges from his own words, and it is clear that Ulysses is incompetent as a ruler as he much prefers to travel the seas and embark on new quests, instead of taking care of his present responsibilities. From one readerââ¬â¢s point of view, Ulysses may be seen as egotistical and selfish as he devotes 26 lines to himself and longing for the travelling life, and another 26 lines to his mariners who travel the seas with him. However, he only devotes 11 lines to his son about how he is to govern his land whilst he is away, and only 2 lines about his ââ¬Å"aged wifeâ⬠. However, in that era, it was the norm for the males to travel the seas and explore the untraveled world, and for the wives and children they would stay at home waiting for the men to return. So one might say Ulysses was doing his duty and what was expected of him at that time. Another poem by Tennyson is Mariana which is drawn from a line in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play Measure for Measure: ââ¬Å"Mariana in the moated grangeâ⬠which is about a woman waiting for her lover Angelo who has abandoned her because of the loss of her dowry. The poem has no real narrative movement and instead is a visual depiction of isolation. One of the most important symbols in this poem is in the fourth and fifth stanzas; the poplar tree can be interpreted as a phallic symbol as it provides a break in a flat and even landscape, ââ¬Å"for leagues no other tree did markâ⬠. The shadow of the poplar tree falls on Marianaââ¬â¢s bed at night when she feels love sick, which may suggest her sexual hunger for lover who has not come for her. The poplarà tree also comes from classic mythology; Ovid describes Oenone addresses the poplar tree in which Paris carved his promise not to desert her. Therefore the tree has become a symbol of a lover and his broken promise. The first, fourth and sixth stanzas are the only stanzas that take place in the daytime. They each show an unending present with no sense of time, light and darkness. These stanzas switch from the descriptions of Mariana feeling restless and sad, she does not sleep or wake but she is in a constant dreamy state of mind. Mariana cries in the morning and evening and awakes in the middle of the night. Going back and forth between a flat day and sleepless night creates a sense of torment and confused time. The poem involves no action or progression, and Mariana is locked in a constant state of longing and isolation. Because of the image we get of Mariana, one view would be that her lover is selfish and arrogant because he only ever wanted her for her dowry, but because she has nothing he no longer sees her as valuable. On the other hand, Tennyson wrote the poem from Marianas point of view, so we do not get a complete picture of what has happened. Overall, one might agree with a readers view that the men in Tithonus, Ulysses and Mariana are whining, selfish and arrogant with little to recommend them. Tithonus is putting guilt on Aurora for giving him immortality, even though he had asked for it. In Ulysses, he is clear that his love of the sea and his travels are greater than that of his wife and child. However, in those days Ulysses was just fulfilling his male role in his society, and this was part of the norm and everyday life for them. In Mariana, we get the impression from the way Tennyson tells the story of Mariana that her lover only really wanted her dowry, but because she has nothing left he is no longer interested and has left her waiting for him, therefore we would sympathise with Mariana. However, the reader is only seeing things from Marianas point of view as Tennyson wrote the poem from her perspective, so we are not getting the full picture of what happened.
